Barb’s Banned Books
The Devil’s Highway
WHERE: Max Kade Room at the Historic Athenaeum
WHEN: Wednesday, July 5th 6pm-8pm
Who bans books, and why? What do banned books have in common?
Celebrate the Year of Vonnegut by reading and discussing a delicious selection of banned books with author Barbara Shoup, whose YA novel, Wish You Were Here, was on the American Library Association’s list of The Hundred Most Banned Books of 1995. Barb’s Banned Book Club will meet monthly through December from 6 to 8 pm at various Vonnegut-related sites around town.
In July, we will meet in The Athenaeum’s Max Cade Room to discuss our reading of Journalist Luis Alberto Urreas’ The Devil’s Highway, which is the true story of 26 Mexican immigrants who attempted to cross into the United States in 2001 through an area known at The Devil’s Highway. Only 12 survived the journey. If you are interested in joining this FREE one-of-a-kind book club, sign up here so that we know how many will be participating. We’ll post signups for the August to December events at a later date.
We look forward to sharing this reading adventure with you, and we are so grateful to Barb Shoup for sharing her time and talent with us.
